Do you ever have a plant whose soil got so dry that you pour water on top and it just sits on top, not soaking into the soil? 

Well, I have. Many times. The soil becomes water-phobic. 

It needs the water, but it’s gone so long without water. 

It repels water. And that’s exactly what it feels like when you’ve been so self-critical goal for your whole life. 

And then you try to be kind to yourself and speak to yourself with compassion and love and empathy and understanding. 

Your natural inclination is to pull away because it doesn’t feel right. It sounds weird. It feels weird. It feels fake. 

But damn it, you know you need it, but you pull away. 

That just means you got to keep adding water and let it slowly seep its way into the soil and rehydrate deep, deep within.
